Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun (2014) – Romantic thoughts of romantically densest guy!

Before I begin, I would like to recommend this anime for everyone irrespective of their preference. It is a praiseworthy anime with a very entertaining approach.

Plot

Chiyo Sakura, a second-year high school student is in love with her senior, Umetaro Nozaki. The only problem is that she cannot confess her love to Nozaki. Or in other words, Nozaki is too dense to notice the romantic side of Sakura. Her confession to him leads to her appointment as assistant to Nozaki (as he is a Shojo manga artist, but nobody believes him). Although he is too dense to see the subtle hints that Chiyo keeps on dropping, he has a very complex understanding of Shojo manga (apparently, he takes it too seriously). His stories are inspired by real people in his life, each of which plays a role of character in his manga. This anime is the collection of adventures of Umetaro Nozaki as he goes on writing his manga.

NozakiSeriously… what’s good about Nozaki???

Story

The story is divided into two parts. One that happens in Nozaki’s manga and the other that happens in Nozaki’s life. This creates a very interesting comparative view by Nozaki, how he perceives people around him. The comparison allows us to see the funny interpretations of each character in the anime (as every-thing in manga passes though the dense filter of Nozaki’s eyes). Thus, the narration in the anime is beautifully stitched.

Voice Acting

There is nothing wrong with voice acting of any cast. All of them play their role perfectly. I would especially like to bring into attention the voice given by Yûichi Nakamura and Miyuki Sawashiro to Umetaro Nozaki and Yuzuki Seo, respectively. Nozaki being very straight forward guy required someone who could mimic a manly voice without much overture. Nakamura did this perfectly. On the contrary, Seo’s character required someone to display her satirical nature (ignorantly though) and reckless attitude alongside angelic voice. Sawashiro did a really job on this.

Direction and Animation

Nozaki

Director has made sure that emotions (which are sporadically spread) are conveyed appropriately. There are clear changes in the back and foreground to reflect this. Also, the animation is up to the mark as per 2014 standards. The only lacking aspect of the anime is the OP. Even though they try to show the nature of each member in the anime in OP, there is a lot of useless animation that could had been substituted by something meaningful.

Overall

I would rate this anime a 9/10. I know, this is pretty much like KonoSuba (which I still find funny) but the nature of direction and humor is different in nature itself. If you liked this anime, you might also like ‘Bakuman.’.

  1. GSNK was great and funny. Never really noticed or payed attention to the voice acting but almost all the jokes and moments worked really well. It felt kind of like a parody of normal romcoms. They got away with having a dense protagonist because they used it to make fun of other romcoms for doing it. That was probably a really bad example but do you get what I mean?

    1. Hi,
As I said, the humor is very different in this anime. For example, I have never seen a character getting embarrassed after speaking cheesy lines (Mikoto Mikoshiba).

tell me your thoughts ...
